Geldlab

Payment requests, buy-now-pay-later options and constant purchasing temptations—young people face a lot, and both debt and money-related stress continue to rise. The GeldLab experience of the Belasting & Douanemuseum (Dutch Tax & Customs Museum) helps students develop financial skills, but how do we encourage schools to return every year?

While working at Vuurrood, I helped the museum answer this question. Based on research and a thorough intake, we developed a communication strategy that highlights the urgency of financial education using data from GeldLab itself. The place where young people can safely experiment with money. At the same time, the strategy supports schools with tools they can immediately apply.

Climate subsidy

Applying for a subsidy isn’t something you do in just five minutes. So how do we make it accessible? With our strategic and conceptual approach, we make the difference you can make crystal clear!

As a resident of Vlaardingen, you can lower the temperature in your home with a green roof, save hundreds of liters of water, and boost biodiversity in your neighborhood. But what exactly can you do? We make it simple with a decision tree—so you’ll immediately know whether you qualify for the subsidy.

We’ve chosen an energetic and cheerful look that matches the positivity all this new greenery will bring. And in the coming weeks, a giant rain barrel will be traveling through Vlaardingen to share this important subsidy with the entire city. That way, we turn every doubter into a subsidy applicant!

Bedtime Monsters

During the day they’re beautiful and innocent still life paintings, but at night they come alive and transform into friendly little monsters! Bedtime Monsters are here to keep children safe at bedtime. The project plays with the given that mundane objects get a mysterious appearance in the dark, especially to the children. Hand screen printed with glow in the dark ink the Bedtime Monsters light up like a little night light to watch over the children.

Inspiration
In the dark a child’s fantasy takes hold of them: Moving shadows over the walls and creepy little sounds are the biggest enemy’s of a night’s rest. With Bedtime Monsters we created a little buddy to keep them safe for all that scares them at night. A night light that watches over them and provide them with a good night’s rest.

During the day they’re innocent colourful still lives, with classical subjects as themes. The still lives come in three different designs: A vase with flowers (available now), a bowl of fruit (available for pre-sale) and one which will be announced later. Each of these illustrations transform into a friendly monster at night.

Educational
Everybody has its own view on things. Whether it’s art or our daily surroundings, from different perspectives we experience it in a different and often new way. Idris and Ivar took this quite literally: their design uses a day to night transformation to create a change in perspective. When a child has a Bedtime Monster in his or her room this is a first step at looking at things in a new light, or in our case: a new dark.

Limited Edition
The art prints are solely printed with bright colourful inks. Screen printed, signed and numbered by hand. The prints come in a limited edition of 200.

In collaboration with Idris van Heffen

Alternative elections posters

A series of alternative posters for the dutch elections of ’21. Based on my personal opinion combined with forms of the (red) pencil that is used to vote during the elections. The left poster says ‘choose your own way’ and reflects on the amount of parties (36) to vote for.  The right poster ‘vote green’ calls to vote for a party that has a green future in mind.

This project is part of Algemene Beschouwingen

About

I. de Jong

I’m an art director with a love for design, photography and building brands from the ground up. After ten years of freelancing, I joined Vuurrood in Rotterdam, where I worked for clients such as the City of Vlaardingen, Albeda College, the Belasting & Douanemuseum and the Vodafone Foundation. Over the years I’ve worked across graphic design, motion graphics, photography and communication concepts, always driven by the belief that clear, simple ideas can make complex stories understandable.

Within a team I’m a connector, someone who enjoys looking critically at processes, supporting others and creating work that has a positive social impact. That mindset shapes not only my work but also my daily life. I care about sustainable living (we recently upgraded our home from an energy label G to A), have been a vegetarian for more than twenty years and love exploring the outdoors. I’m also passionate about analogue photography, even though it keeps getting more expensive.

In addition to client work, I enjoy developing my own projects. One of them is Mudshirt, a small project in which I silkscreen print T-shirts using local mud. Creating with my hands keeps me grounded, curious and inspired.
